Schmalkalden university of applied science is located in the center of Thurigia and its history dates back to 1902 Royal Prussian School for Mechanical engineering. Schmalkalden university is known for its mechanical engineering course but currently it has 5 faculties and offers 16 bachelors, 8 master’s courses as well as 12 part time degree program course. Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences perceives itself as a regional competence centre for technology and innovation in Southern Thuringia and is, for many enterprises, a significant cooperation and network partner for research and technology transfer. Thus, the focus of Schmalkalden University is on research, development and further education in the field of engineering sciences and computer science.

The chair of automation and robotics at Hochschule Schmalkalden under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank Schrödel has been active since 2020. As part of professorship, he teaches courses in the bachelor’s and master’s program in the field of automation technology and robotics. Prof. Schrödel is also the head of the Schmalkalden student research centre and Representative Jugend Forscht, where he focuses on enhancing the STEM knowledge of the younger generation and encourages them to implement through research activities. With his expertise in the field of automation, robotics and control engineering, Prof. Frank Schrödel has focus in three fields of applications namely mobile robotics, industrial robots and industrial automation in the University. During the semester, a variety of laboratory exercises are carried out in the four laboratories of the professorship. Apart from the regular laboratory exercises, Prof Schrödel also promotes open lab concepts, where the students are provided access to work on various projects in the lab that enhance their skills. In addition, Professor Schrödel is very active in the field of networking, with the aim of making both teaching and applied research as practice relevant as possible. His great interest in applied research is evident from his large number of regular publications and lectures from recent years.
